Permits and Safe Driving

Driving & Safety Tips

  1. The only cars permitted on Fraser Island are 4WD’s.
  2. Vehicle permits are required for all vehicles on Fraser Island. Permits can be obtained from various locations, more details on this website.
  3. Tyre pressures should be set at appropriate levels before driving on the beach and the inland tracks.
  4. The beaches on Fraser are highways with speed limits of 80km/h and the inland tracks have a speed limit of 35km/h.
  5. Normal road rules apply on sand tracks and beaches.
  6. It is important to carry a recovery strap, long handle spade, first aid kit, a tyre gauge, air pump, and your vehicle permits.
  7. It is strongly recommended that you travel within 2 hours either side of the low tide so you are more likely to be able to drive on hard sand below the high tide mark.
  8. Tide times are available here.
